5 kilometers is the minimum distance she would have to walk to the nearest hospital to give birth safely in rural Ghana. That’s 5 kilometers (approximately 3 mi) she has to walk in the hot, unyielding sun of the dry season or torrential storms of the rainy season while in labor. But who is “she”?

She is the woman who has had multiple children and never once received postnatal care. She is the woman who fears for her unborn baby’s life but has no way of reaching the care they need. She is not just one woman; she is the multitude of women who have given birth on the side of the road as they walk to seek medical care.
