The Okoa Project is launching a second COVID19 initiative
Accra, Ghana; 3/31/2021
Cases of COVID19 are once again on the rise throughout Ghana, and infection rates are growing faster than before due to the emergence of new strains of the virus. Ghana has only just begun their vaccination program, and the rate at which they are able to receive and distribute the vaccine is not able to keep up with the spread. Particularly vulnerable areas are those most remote, like Sissala East. Given the incredibly difficult logistics of moving the vaccine anywhere, getting it safely to the farthest corners of the country will be a significant challenge, leaving rural communities vulnerable. In an effort to stem the spread of new variants, The Okoa Project will use its ambulances to distribute face masks and hand washing stations.
The Okoa Project plans to hire local people in Sissala East to make 5,000 cloth face masks. These masks will be distributed throughout the communities in the district along with educational information about wearing and using a mask correctly. Additionally, 8 “hands free” hand washing stations are being built by our engineering team in Tumu. These operate by pushing a foot pedal to turn the tap on in order to minimize hand-to-hand contact. Masks cost $2 each and hand washing stations cost $85 each.
